'Request to Build' comes up enough that we need a consistent way to deal with it.

Firstly, Start the Thread with 'Request to Build: Model Train Part Number x-xxxxx' This is so the thread doesn't get buried and lost over time... and, allows Designer's to easily search 'Request to Build' listings and much more likely to result in a positive outcome for both parties.

1. Give the Designers as much information as you can... please be concise not prolific in your descriptions.  If you cannot commit to doing the research then the likelihood of finding a Designer willing to do the leg work for you without assurances that the project will proceed are fairly close to Zero.

2.  Name the Manufacturer, Make, Model, Part Number (not, this model... or, that model etc.)

3. Dimensional Drawings and Photographs.  If concerned about copyright... .zip your 'project' files and have them available to email to Designers 'before' posting a 'Request to Build' and please state that you have the .zip files available in your post.   You may and are encouraged to provide a list of URL(s) that you have found in your post (do not count on a Designer doing that research for you... see, 1. above).

4. Measurements.  If you have the part/item... please use a set of calipers to provide accurate inside and outside dimensions.  OR, if you can send the part/item to the Designer please state that in your post.

5. Do not discuss prices/payments/financing on the forum... please, do so privately.

Anybody, who wishes to add, edit or delete the above info please have at it.

Dennis,

I am confused, most likely I don't spend enough time on the forum. I don't know what a "request to build" is?  Is the original poster asking for someone to construct and/or design a structure or a train? Or is this for members trying to find someone to print?  Or something else altogether. Sorry about my ignorance but I want to understand the purpose of the format.

Thanks, kevin

Kevin, I could be wrong too, ( that’s 99% of the time ) but I believe this has more to do with the 3D printing work that’s gaining a lot more interests these days ……of course I’m speculating, ….Big Dennis could tell us more …..

Pat

So I am using it, for example here. It's a shout out to have someone print me stuff.

I need help to build some fans as they are really tough to build any other way. I posted a request for help explaining what I needed, the locomotive model I am working on, and the scale I'm building in (1/32 scale).

I thought I had the basics for the request. There was addition stuff needed so the post got it started and after several emails, it's moving forward.

This is going to be a fantastic help on this forum. Many modelers want to fix pilots (steps) on diesels for example. There has to be parts for almost each and every model ever made. 3d printing makes these parts possible when there's no other source.

Joe and Pat,

Thank you for getting me squared away. Seems my stubborn self is missing all the wonders of modern technology. It is quite possible the 3D printer may not make it into my knowledge base. Speaking of which, as the days pass the aforementioned base appears to leak even more.

Bart Simpson once explained to his teacher that adding new knowledge in one ear caused existing knowledge to fall out the other. Therefore, he wanted to be careful about learning new.

Now that I am up to speed, I think Dennis has a very well-reasoned approach.

Snow blowing in the Puget Sound this morning. Regards, kevin

Yup,  Joe is the first to utilize the 'Request to Build' terminology... where one can define the needed part/item to be 3D printed.   If you type Request to Build in the search function... Joe's post/thread comes up first.   Is there an easier/better terminology to describe a Request to have someone Build a part/item for you?  Probably.   I tried to note in the first post... add, edit or delete at will ...I'm certainly not the most fluid or delicate writer around here.

Request to build....I have two Atlas MTH GP40's  The just released ones #30138027. Has anybody made fixed pilots for MTH GP40s. Im in need of two pilots for each of these locomotives.

Thank you

Clem

Clem, if you are wanting these parts, the first thing to do is create a new post to contain the info within a thread.
