Hello all,

I wanted to share with you what is known as the Ampaint bible in order to raise awareness on correct paint scheme names, as well as provide a resource for the custom painters out there who want to be as accurate as possible. MTH and Kato have begun to rename their incorrectly named Phase IVb offerings to the correct Phase VI.

Attached is the guide, courtesy of Matt Donnelly.

No problem. I think it's definitely a great resource as I would never have guessed the Acela is a Phase V scheme. The same goes for the plain silver and black scheme found on most Amtrak switchers and locomotives usually used in MOW service. I always thought it was a separate scheme, and I was surprised to learn that it was essentially Phase III sans stripes. Of course now this makes sense, it just never crossed my mind.

So, for the TL;DR guys, essentially what the guide will tell you is that the schemes that exist are Phase I, Phase II, Phase III, Phase IV, Phase V, Phase VI, Pacific Surfliner, CDTX, and Cascades. Phase IIIb and IIIa are not real schemes and do not exist, they are simply called Phase III. Phase IVb is not a real scheme, it is actually Phase VI. Phase Vb is not a real thing either, simply Phase V. I tried to inform a guy on YouTube that Vb didn't exist when he incorrectly identified Phase V as Vb, and he refused to believe me, even when I provided the link. He then proceeded to claim Amtrak can call it whatever it wants, but the scheme is Phase Vb regardless, and of course he didn't provide proof. It was Vb because he said so lol. I think when Amtrak owns the rights to and creates something themselves they have a right to tell people what the scheme is actually called. Quite entertaining. That said though, I would prefer that everyone reading this thread and reading the link is open minded and understands why Amtrak released the document in the first place.

Thanks for this resource! I have downloaded a copy to my PC. Another excellent resource for Amtrak fans is the following book:

Yes, that is a good resource for modeling the past. A lot has happened in 6 years. P42 #66 is gone, to be "replaced" by #130 as the Phase II heritage unit (confirmed by Matt Donnelly and now we have visual confirmation), the AEM-7s are gone, the HHP-8s are gone, the Heritage Diners are gone, the Heritage baggages are largely gone (heard some were still in service due to axle count requirements), the Pacific Parlour cars are gone, and the F59PHIs are going to be gone system-wide, (despite recent rebuilds; only exception being NCDOT's fleet) to be purchased by Metra. Then there's been the addition of Viewliner IIs, Talgo 8s, Comet IB rebuilds, ACS-64s, and Chargers.
