I picked up what I am fairly sure is a Std Ga 428 (4 wheel trucks)- very bad shape. Been spray painted silver, apparently in total dark after a few beers. I have to tear it apart, but never having touched one of the 400 cars before, I am not certain how it is put together. How are the seats removed? Are they soldered in, or are there tabs of some sort that are hard to see? I think once I get them out I should be able to sort out the rest of the disassembly. Fortunately, the artist who painted this did not take time to remove the original orange paint, so I hope my usual method of boiling the car parts in dishwasher pellets for a few hours should take off all of the paint. I see that the orange cars had light green inserts for the widow frames which I expect to confirm in taking it apart. What color were the seats in the orange cars?

Can you post a few photos, bottom, top, and sides...
If they were installed the way MTH reproduced them, they are attached to the false floor with eyelets. Getting the false floor out is a pain because you have to remove the roof braces and possibly the end bulkheads. Pics would help.
Turns out the answer was simple. The chairs are fastened to the window panels at the bottom with two metal tabs. I loosened the top of window panel, shifted the window panel so the back of the tabs were visible in the five windows and then pried each one of them up. Once the chairs on one side were removed, I could remove that window panel as well as the panel from the other side without removing the chairs (which I will anyway to repaint them). Glad this wasn't done with a false floor. Now to get rid of the silver spray paint.... (see pics)

The seats were Apple Green. Harry
Harry The orange car did have apple green window panel trim under the silver spay paint, but all 10 of the seats were red once I stripped off the silver paint. In two cases (see photo) the chairs had another color underneath the red - one did look like apple green and the other was a tan color that may have been altered by the hot dishwashing tablet solution I use to remove paint. Apple green seats seem likely, although I haven't found any reference stating seat color for the orange version to confirm that until your reply. Did someone remove them, paint them red and put them back in the car? I'd like to use the correct color. Thanks. Steve

The doors, windows and seats on the later orange painted cars were normally Apple Green. The earlier dark green cars would have red seats, & wood grained maroon doors. Harry
Then I will go with apple green for the seats as it is most common AND I already have the paint for that color. The doors were apple green also but 3 of the 4 were severely bent so I am putting on new ones. Do you happen to know what shade of orange paint was used on this car? Does your store sell the steps used on this? Thanks again. Steve
We do have a limited number of re-pro MTH brass steps. The orange is our #14 orange. Harry
