i have always been careful to keep smoke fluid in my newer locomotives being scared of burning a modern fan driven smoke unit up. Occasionally I have "flooded" them. Usually just keep running them and they are fine. This year both my Lionel Brit Castle class GWR 4-6-0 and MTH Railking Triplex began the season smoking. I think I have overdosed both of them. Other than running them enough to get some of it burned off (which hasn't worked this time) is there any trick I can use? I hate to have to send two locos in for service. Both have  some time in service, 13 years on the Triplex and I think that Shakespearek express has been in service at least ten years. Do they just wear out?

On the other hand my Lionel 736 Berkshire Santa brought in 1958 always smokes and doesn't care if it runs out of fluid.

One thing that has worked for me in the past was repeatedly inserting Q-tips down the stack and into the smoke unit to soak up excess fluid. Keep repeating this until the Q-tip comes out just damp. That should do it. Note that this only works on engines with a straight stack. Engines with a twisted S curve fitting between the smoke unit and the stack opening won't work. You may be able to have some success with a pipe cleaner as well.
