I've never modelled in narrow gauge.  But I've been to Switzerland a few times and I'm a huge fan of the Rhaetian Railway: the new Allegra units, the old Rhaetian Crocodiles and their Pullman cars, and the older-still Rhaetian steam engines.  I'm also interested in some of the Swiss rack-assisted railways, like the Furka Steam Railway or the Berner Oberland Bahn.  I'd love to get models of these in O Gauge.  I know Bemo makes the Rhaetian Railway, at least, in HO-narrow gauges.  But does anybody know if any manufacturer has ever produced Rhaetian Railway materials in O narrow gauge?  Or any of the other Swiss railways?

Thanks.  It looks like Bemo has a very small line-up in 0m but it also looks like they've not been doing this very long - does anybody know if they plan to release more?

I've never done narrow gauge so what does 0m mean in terms of gauge?  Is it the same track as S gauge?  Could I use Lionel S gauge Fastrack?  I only run "carpet layouts" so what I'd really like to find is something similar to Fastrack or Realtrax that clicks together, holds well, and then dismantles easily.  And with tight turns - which I would hope would be easy to find in narrow gauge!

Thanks,

Brendan

Brendan,

0m is the European name for meter gauge with a scale of 1:45 (see the picture of European standards). The Rhaetian Railway (Rhätische Bahn = RhB) uses a gauge of 1 meter (100 cm) and there the m is coming from. I am not in narrow gauge at all, but know about Fama since when that was made many years ago I thought it was a good idea to use it for my S gauge trains, so I bought some track and still use it. So you could use modern S gauge straight and curved track for 0m trains also; however, I do not know about the use of other track parts, like switches, crossings etc.

Regards

As stated by Fred, Bemo does make a small amount of Om and you can still find some rhb and fo stuff from fama on eBay and train shows. I seem to recall that not all Om trains will run on s gauge track, but I'm not sure. Most Om stuff seems to be high priced brass trains.

The fama/utz stuff is by far the most affordable, as even Bemo om has high listed prices - although I've never checked actual prices, so it might be worth a look. Given the prices, and very limited selection in Om, I would suggest going with either HOm, which seems affordable on eBay, or g gauge lgb, kiss, brawa. I prefer the big trains myself, but of course some of the equipment is not quite to scale or perfectly accurate.  Oh, and prices keep climbing too.
