Anyone going to purchase the new RMT LIRR passenger cars? I'm thinking about it... especially considering that I'm concentrating on standard gauge tinplate and my o gauge layout will be a smaller 031 layout.

There is one problem i can see with the LIRR sets: the dome. I lOVE them, but why place them in set of railroads that NEVER had hem. An extra coach would be nice.
Also, in the 1970/s, the LIRR ordered MP15DC's which could be used as road power for a passenger train, or used as a HEP power car. RMT has both the MP15 and these passenger cars fron K-Line tooling. A set with painting correct to that time would be nice. (MP15 road power, passenger cars, MP15 HEP. MP15's couls run "push-pull.)
are they using k lines molds?
Got mine in mail yesterday. They look great even with a dome car. I'll be running today on club layout. I like the paint job! Maybe Walter will at some point sell individual add on coaches.

I model the LIRR in the steam era, so the RMT cars are too modern for me.

LIRR notes
This is a review for the LIRR O-27 Streamlined Passenger SET-1 from RMT consisting of #7738 baggage car and #2523 Coach. These cars are all based on the old K-Line molds but have also been updated with modern electronics and improved graphics and color application. I have been admiring the color choice RMT chose for its Long Island cars and locomotives for sometime. For those who are not familiar with this color scheme it is commonly referred to as the Goodfellow color scheme named after Thomas Goodfellow, LIRR president from 1955-1967. This particular choice of colors also coincided with the arrival of the Alco RS-3s, of which the RMT BEEPs have a resemblance to.
Packaging
If you haven't ordered from RMT in a while you will first notice that they have changed the color of their boxes from blue to what I like to call spar or buff (spar is the color we use on all our fixed deck gear on cutters in the Coast Guard). I like this color over the blue as the lettering and Aristo/RMT symbols are easier to see with this choice of color and the boxes are now more pleasing overall to look at.
The cars come packaged in form fitted styrofoam, wrapped in a clear plastic sheet with a sturdy clear plastic face plate covering the top of the styrofoam. The rubber, accordion type, diaphragms are enclosed and need to be installed. Once these diaphragms are installed though, the car will not fit back into the styrofoam unless these rubber pieces are removed. Also enclosed are two extra light bulbs for their StreamLighting system. More on that later.

The Cars
The cars are snugly fit in the styrofoam so the plastic wrap was very handy in removing the cars. Upon first handling you can immediately tell the cars are very well put together and have a good weighty feel to them. Construction is solid and the details in the mold, accoutrements, and graphics are immediately evident.

Trucks and Couplers
The trucks are a little different from what I am used to, but I am still a novice to the Toy Train world. Where most car's trucks are commonly what appear to be an anodized metal truck so often seen on nearly every type of car, the RMT cars have what appears to be a slightly longer truck that is painted in gloss black. Nothing wrong here and it matches well with the cars.
The couplers are interesting. All the couplers are very sturdy and made of metal. Of note is that all of them are also set up for automatic magnetic coupler track. There are no side tabs for coupler releasing and the assembly appears to be a newer style rather than an older post war style but i will let someone chime in on that as i am not too familiar with auto coupler systems in general. Either way, not an issue for me.

Lighting and Interiors
The RMT steam lined passenger cars use StreamLighting similar to other K-Line passenger cars. As mentioned above, each car comes with two extra bulbs. Included in the provided instructions are ideas for dying the bulbs other colors, like blue for a night time mood. Also included in the instructions are the effects on the overall lighting should a bulb go out.
The interiors are well done and show seating and tables. Of note are the etchings on the windows. The window etchings are of pull down window blinds that appear in different lengths in different windows. The effect is rather unique, adds to the overall pleasurable appearance and further demonstrates the level of detail paid attention to by the folks at RMT in redesigning the old K-Line passenger sets.

Summary
In closing, I am greatly impressed with these cars. Their overall appearance and weighty/sturdy feel will give you the confidence that you definitely got your money's worth and more. Though this review is only for SET-1 of a two set consist I am sure that the other two cars in SET-2 are of equal footing.
Kudos to Walter and his team for another well made and affordable product. If you haven't had a chance to look at these cars I suggest you go to their website and check them out. Currently, only the LIRR, NYC, Norfolk So, and Texas Spc sets are in stock with the rest scheduled to arrive sometime this fall I am told. I know I am waiting for the Baltimore and Ohio set to arrive so I can create my mini-"Columbian" using my RMT B&O BEEF ABA set.

The Lionel RTR set appears to be an update of their 2400 series passenger cars.
If this is the case, you'll find the RMT cars to be superior.
These K-Line Streamliner cars are longer than the Lionel 2400 cars, and already had much more detailing than Lionel, let alone any enhancements done by RMT.

The Lionel's are very light with plastic trucks, but they have a quality paint job and the matching engine is a strong puller. I got the whole set including add on 2 pak (5 cars total) track, CW80, and the engine for about $50 more than the 4 RMT. Good deal for sure. I posted them in weekend photo fun:
Ken, thanks for the comparison. It is exactly what I was hoping for. I see the K-line/RMT cars are bigger and more detailed than the Lionel set. Bigo, thanks for your input as well, the value per dollar is important, especially now. I have a bunch of RMT trains in the LIRR scheme and love them, Walter is terrific. I was hesitating on the passenger cars though. It seems that both mfrs. have their strengths, I have to sell some stuff to buy both sets!

Thanks for the great review and pics. I have the 4 car set, and I agree with everything that you said. You've alleviated any sense of guilt that I have for not doing it myself. However, I don't think I could have done as good a job as your illustrative wording.
I did notice that the rear light on the observation car isn't lite though the marker lights are nice and bright. I'll see if I can do something about this.
I do have the Weaver RS3 which is also of a Goodfellow color scheme. The gray is a different shade(lighter), but they look great together.

You could probably pretty easily customize one of the unmarked sets that should be coming out later. It would be nice to have a set to go alongtwitch the CNJ BEEF sets.
Im contemplating customizing a BEEF set in McGinnis colors,preferably the silver style ala:

It looks like it might be easier than the black McGinnis scheme. Then, get a full set of the unmarked passenger cars and easily put an orange horizontal stripe thru the window section to make some nice New Haven O-27 cars for the loco.
Hopefully MTH will step up to the plate and make the correct versions of true O scale LIRR cars and cabooses some day.
I believe they underestimated the new RS-1 sales. I hear there is a shortage on them prior to hitting the stores.
So far, other than the O scale diesels, IMW has been the only one to bring a correct version of commuter cars to market.
Unfortunately they are 2 rail and undecorated.
20 years ago I would have jumped all over these RMT's. Walter really did a nice paint job on them while providing the traditional market with some LIRR's.

What do you think about running these together with the Lionel set? I just got the Lionel set for Christmas. I measured the Lionel cars and they only measure a little over 11" coupler to coupler. I know the Lionel description lists them at 13.25". The RMTs are listed at approx. 13.5". I am just wondering how they will look running all together? That would be a nice train - 9 cars long. Do you think the Lionel RS-3 would pull it with it's one motor?

We use the new Lionel RS 3 at the museum layout on Long Island and I doubt if it could pull your cars. This is not a great puller.
Lenny J...If your RS-3 cannot handle these RMT cars suggest using the RMT LIRR BEEP (or two) like shown in SeaBilleau's above post. And the grey/orange paint matches too!

My one BEEP, in LIRR colors, pulls all four cars pretty effortlessly. Looks good on the supersnap track too.
My wife got me the Lionel LIRR set for Christmas. And when RMT had their half off sale, I bought both 2-packs of the LIRR streamliners. Although sitting them together, they are not a great match - the Lionels are about 2 inches shorter lengthwise and they have black roofs as the RMTs have grey and the lighting and window treatments differ. But, when I run them as one train, you really have to look close as they are going by to see the differences. It is not a bad looking train. I was even able to pull the 7 cars with the the single motor Lionel RS-3 (a little wheel slip when first starting off). Train definitely moves better using the NLOE C420.

Hi Walter. I really like the LIRR cars and I remember this paint scheme but I never saw dome and baggage cars even in the modern era. I'm not saying they didn't exist, but I never saw that. I would love to be able to buy an observation car and 5 or 6 coaches. I can't say I remember observation cars either on the LIRR, but I love observation cars on passenger trains.
Perhaps you could consider having one set with an observation car and one coach. Have two sets of two coaches and then one last set that is a dome and baggage set. I think that would make LIRR fans happy.

Regarding the dome cars...not really. However, domes are needed to allow 'Little Wally' a better view while on your layout.
Production and packaging does not currently allow individual car sales, however I will look into that based on your (and other) requests.

Walter is okay for an Alabama fan! GO DAWGS!!! I love my RMT stuff. I agree on the wanting more coaches for passenger trains. Also would be nice to see the Pink stuff as a set.
