One of my big issues is failure to create a clean transition from my roads to adjacent scenery. I've thought about a gravel shoulder but wondering what other suggestions others may have. I've tried just about every idea/common sense plan out there. Wondering what others do. Thanks!

I've also seen grass come up to the road edge. If you're doing sidewalks then a curb might be in order.
For roads between the track rails I use N gauge cork roadbed. I split it in two and use each half between the middle and outer rails, beveled edge to the outer rail for flange clearance. One half comes slightly wider than the other so I cut it down 1/8" with a scissor. The nice thing about it is that it can be painted and bends easily for curved track. Glue it down to the ties with wood glue or hot glue. Good luck with your layout!
Thanks gentleman. I actually was just downstairs working on it, I opted to bring the grass right up to the road but did it VERY carefully and slowly since I was doing it freehand. Not perfect but far better than it was before. My experiment with a small gravel shoulder elsewhere on my layout didn't turn out as well as I had hoped and will be removing it.
