I have quite a large layout laid out - not nailed down. I'm not a huge fan of rubber roadbed - cost of 150+ feet and what you you do about 1/2 sizes and custom sizes (I sometimes need to add short pieces.) Cork roadbed, I suppose you have to cut cork to fit under the switches, and if it's on cork you don't get that nice filled in look between the ties. What works good? Thanks

I also have a flyer layout, similar in size to yours or larger. My track is fastened down but with hot glue. I have a good number of special sized pieces, where I needed a special size would cut it with tin snips, cutting track was more of a problem.

What Ray did with the hot glue for a permanent layout was brilliant. I build temporary layouts with Gilbert track and rubber roadbed. Just use small brads every other track section to hold it in position. Never fasten down a turnout when using rubber roadbed unless it is shimmed to the same height. I just let my turnouts float. With heavy duty scissors the roadbed is easy to cut. I have made many custom short sections. Plus the roadbed needs to have a cut out wherever there is an uncoupler of an operating track section. For the edges of the turnouts I cut the side beveled edge off a lot of straight sections of roadbed, then glued the beveled edge pieces to the edges of the turnouts. They then blend right into the track with the roadbed.
