Years ago, I bought a 6-18001 steamer at an auction.  I later discovered that the reason I got such a great deal was that the engine drive was bad, and that this engine had a very bad reputation for drive failure.  Fortunately, the very next issue of OGR had a story on the problems with this engine having been caused by the use of the wrong bearings in the drive train.  Actually, the fix article was rewritten in the next OGR because it turns out the bearing problem was the result of wrong bearings identified by the wrong part number.  The story goes on, but the bottom line is a local dealer repaired mine and it runs great.  The only problem is, I don't know what sound functions I am supposed to be getting from the sound system in the tender.  There is an on/off switch under the tender which doesn't seem to have any effect on anything.  Lionel does not list an owners manual for this engine, so I am looking for someone who could provide me a copy or explain what I am supposed to be getting.    All help greatly appreciated.

I have the 18003 Lackawanna version of this beast.  The tender has a tether that plugs into the engine.  You won't get any sounds without that.  The sounds with the switch in the "ON" position is the mighty sound of scratch.  It is a constant white noise.  The whistle is an electronic thing like I've never heard.  That will run off your transformer whistle handle.

I am looking to upgrade to Electric RR and hopefully tweak the anemic smoke unit, too.

Despite all that, it is the first upscale {for its time} Lionel I have ever owned.  I have one that runs.  Jim Barrett did about 10 pages in OGR on fixing the drive system which includes references to the part numbers gone awry.  Hope this is useful.  You may already have this:  http://www.lionel.com/Customer...311-872DE3DB92BA05AC
