A forumite mentioned the movie THE EDGE. So I decided to download it off Amazon ($10.00).

A Russian drama, romance (sort of) and black comedy with steam locomotives. Lot of steam locomotives. Too many steam locomotives! I think at least half the shots were through steam vapor. Probably the most steam action and engine close ups of any movie ever made.

Back in April I posted about the full length Mickey Rooney train movie, "The Emperor of Peru", where some kids found a derelict engine in the woods, restored it and successfully used it to run away from home (Disney NOT !).

Coincidentally THE EDGE was also about a guy finding an old engine, with girl, in the woods and restoring it, and her.

I loved the movie!!

If you noticed at the end of the film it is taken from a true story. For whatever reason I think this Russian film was very well done very realistic and i did like the acting!!

The main character is one cool dude very believeable as a former Sargent in the Front lines of the Russian great Patriotic War complete with episodes of Post Trauma War Syndrome.

By the way where did you buy it I would like to own it

I ordered it from Amazon as a download, $9.99. You have to download their free player first. It has a file for all movies you download so you can watch them any time.  My computer is wired to a wall projector which was perfect for this film.

You are right, I viewed the film a second time and it really is a fine movie. Perhaps the best train movie ever!

Some things I didn't understand colored my first impression. Now I know much of the random whistling was actually signals. The Sargent actually signaled his movements when first starting the derelict engine way out  in the woods.  Habit, I guess. Also, I now realize that there were at least three different languages spoken. Russian plus a Baltic language for many workers.   And German for the girl that lived throughout the war in the old engine, which was understood by a few workers who were in German camps.

Interesting that the little boy, rescued by the Russian girl from his dead German mother, was mute until the German girl spoke to him in German. How did they ever find a kid actor to play that part?  Amazing.

The mysterious high official, Fishman, who arrived in his own 2-10-2, made such an incredible speech lambasting the camp workers that I actually felt guilty.

Superb movie, superior acting, wonderful scenery and unsurpassed steam action
