Mickey Rooney (RIP) plays a retired engineer in a little known, at least in the U.S., children's movie titled "Odyssey of the Pacific".  Also released as "The Emperor of Peru".  A brother and sister, along with an adopted boy from Cambodia who wants to go home, befriend an old retired engineer who is living as a hermit in woods.  They find an old rusty steam locomotive and, with Mickey's help, get it running.  In the end they all take off for Cambodia, or is it Peru, or is it a dream.  It's a Canadian children's movie so you know it is going to be a bit quirky.

It's a very cute if short little movie - and very, very train/locomotive oriented.  I forgot all about it when I was listening to Rooney obituaries this morning, until you posted this. My sons and I watched the movie back in the 80s - it's one reason the middle boy got into model trains (he is still into them 30 years later).

Thanks.

Gentlemen,

Actually this is a nice little move that Rooney stared in and was quite fond of, as Bill indicated it is a little quirky and the children of that era loved it.  I do not believe it was ever released in the USA.  Rooney was a 1st class guy and a serious talent all of his life.  America and Canada will miss him badly!

PCRR/Dave
