For layout stuff related to the story, I've seen Dept. 56 houses and Lionel's train set & cars.

I really like the Oldsmobile in a "Christmas Story." Research revealed it was a 1937 model. I searched for it in various scales and low and behold Brooklin models has it in 1:43 scale, though it's well over $100. At first, I was flabbergasted as I've never paid that much for a metal car or truck; then I began thinking about all the expensive scale rolling stock I've purchased. I don't know if that's a fair comparison or not? I suppose I could do without some rolling stock and sell some, though we never get close to what we paid...so if I sold 3 pieces of rolling stock, I could afford the '37 Oldsmobile. It's odd that we don't have more choices in diecast cars and trucks from the 1930s as this is arguably the most classic period of American made cars.

Has anyone incorporated any of the Christmas story stuff on their layout? Or even dedicated a section to their layout? I am guessing the timeline is late 1940s?

I have 3 cars from the 2012 set.   Shoot your eye out boxcar, leg lamp gondola and collage caboose.   I found them about 5 years ago at a good price.      Current prices on the Double Dog Dare you boxcar are about 3x what I got the others for.

My daughter thinks it is the worst Christmas movie ever.    I don't argue with her.  There is a  lack of real Christmas spirit.    There is a cafeteria style restaurant chain called Luby's here in Texas that is open on Christmas.   I have seen a line a block long on Christmas day there.   I think of the Chinese restaurant scene when I see this.

If you really want a leg lamp for your layout, I have seen a "Leg Lamp" store that was dedicated to selling Leg Lamps.  It was in Tokyo in 2007.   The price U.S. for the lamps was about $100-130.  I did resist a purchase.

Well, I am not as critical of the movie as you are; it is a satire and admittingly I've never the book. The current round of Christmas movies made over the last 20 or so years are pretty pitiful when it comes to Christmas Spirit. However, after watching the movie I have to say that Jean Shepard's (Ralphy) comments about the lamp and Ralphy's awareness of the F-word were odd to say the least; we're talking late 1940s and the boy is in the 3rd or 4th grade? I didn't know about these things until much later, and I grew up in the late 60s and 70s .
