Got into another February Foto-Funnie mood today after dragging out my original AM FP7's for some exercise. These 30 year old locomotives still run like champs (No split gears here...) The freight cars in the train are also from my first couple of years in S, mostly AM with 3 Lionel/Flyer conversions. All predate SHS's entry.
The Linde and DuBuque cars actually predate my FP7's. These were the first two cars I bought when I decided to poke at S to see if it was worth abandoning HO. The FP7's followed about three months later.
The FP7s are also thirty years old and have run without a problem since then. One E8 had a split gear that was easy to replace. In the thirty years since I began with American Models, the painting has improved dramatically and the detailing has also improved significantly. The trucks on the Budd cars are a good example of wonderful detailing as well as improved functionality. One thing that has not changed is dependability. A ready-to-run American Models locomotive, passenger car, or freight car is just that: ready to run right out of the box--for at least thirty years or more in most cases.
