Sorry for your loss Chris, I went through the loss of my father a few years ago and I know what you're going through, he gave me my first train when I was one year old and I have built on it every year since then and my dad was the guy that built the carpentry on every layout I ever had except my current one. I'm glad I learned woodworking from him.

Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. Your kindness is much appreciated. I am totally amazed and grateful for all your responses. I also showed this thread to my mother. She was equally amazed.

PS I forgot to tell you: Dad also built our first layout. It was the other half of the trains present that Christmas. I don't remember exactly what he told us that kept all of us out of the basement, but it worked! My brother and I had no idea what we were getting.
