There's no magic cure to fix it, if you do want to try, you have to disassemble the truck and do a little bending of the internal lever.

I dont see why what you did isnt a permanent solution. How often to you use an uncoupling track to uncouple passenger cars? I suspect never. Its fixed, forget about it.

I love that generation of the MTH and Lionel coupler release when they work well but have seen that kind of failure on one or two eBay purchases. I took one apart once thinking "how hard can it be to fix?" Very hard. At least for me anyway. My solution has been to hunt through the "junkyard" until I find a matching size truck and swap out the bad one. Otherwise if you don't like the tape, just bond it with the right adhesive.
