Definitely pre ordering this beauty. I have 5 of the Proto 1 versions mainly because I love this engine and partly because through the years you could pick them up in mint condition under $400! What I liked about the early (1995) Proto 1 version was that it was produced in Korea and done in a very, very, thick, heavy  cast.  They are definitely one of the heftiest engines in my roster with articulateds included. I hope this new run is cast heavy and not put on a diet.

My question is: What do the forum members think is a reasonable preorder price on this unit?

I don't know, really, of course - but as it is 1200 in the catalogue, I'd say 1000 pre-order would be the target (OK, for the pickers of nit: 1199/999).

I have one (just one) of the PS-1 versions, and I love it; it has long been on my conversion-to-ERR/TMCC list, but never bubbled to the top. Partly because I have the fully-equipped Lionel ATSF 3751 already, though I prefer the 2900's, speaking of nit-picking. If you aren't dedicated to PS3, why not convert one (or all!) of your PS-1's to ERR Command/Cruise/RS instead? $200+ and you've got a modern loco.

Probably - almost definitely (there's that SP GS-class to consider, after all) - the ATSF 2900's are my second-favorite 4-8-4's, the NYC Niagaras, of course, being on top.

hello ARMFD........

Just a small note, MTH did make a #5012,5025 version of the 2-10-4's  using the 2900's 4-8-4 boiler.  I had one of the #20-3056-1 # 5012  2-10-4 and it is very heavy so this is the same boiler casting.  The 2900's boiler is the wrong type for the 2-10-4. I didn't even notice it until I saw the brass version of the 5011 in how wrong the boiler is nevertheless it is one heavy engine and will pull a good size train !!! I believe the MTH boiler casting is even thicker than the 773, 763 even the 700's lionel Hudsons.  I have seen broken off cab castings from the 763's and much to my surprise that the castings are thin !!!
