Erik,
A question for you....I have a PRB Hudson. Looking at those Santa Fe cars, what would you suggest that I run with that engine? Thanks.
Norm
Norm,
The AT&SF Hudsons lasted until the mid-'50s. As a general rule, they ran on the eastern lines. It would be possible to run either the streamlined Chief or a heavyweight secondary train like the Ranger.

Erik,
Thanks for posting those photos.

Here's some Burlington mainline mixeds from the '30's: http://digital.denverlibrary.o...l22/id/45968/rec/104

I observe in the last photo, a Great Northern truss rod boxcar, which was done in O Scale by Pacific Limited. I find mainline mixeds to be intriguing! These trains were running on the Lincoln-Denver and Lincoln-Alliance mainlines of the Burlington. Note the +/- bar above the pictures which allows for a magnified view.
(sorry, I don't seem able to master picture posting without the web address)
Ah ha! Found another. A Rock Island BL2 with a mixed out on the high plains of eastern CO. http://digital.denverlibrary.o...oll22/id/46791/rec/1
Be sure to puff it up with the +/- bar......looks real nice!
Santa Fe 2-6-2 on mixed, if anyone cares! http://digital.denverlibrary.o...ll22/id/58583/rec/17
Ah, good! Thought I was yelling down a manhole! I love mixed trains because the passenger cars are usually antiques and, well, I just love freight equipment. Particularly during the Depression, mixeds popped up to put a little revenue on formerly money-losing passenger trains. Some of that happened even in the '70's as the Rock Island put a bit of freight on their remaining passenger trains. (Believe they opted out of Amtrak participation)
BTW, note the big 12 wheel tank on the quite elderly Santa Fe 2-6-2, above. Definitely not OEM!
I used to see trains like these on t.v. shows like gunsmoke. And later on in older movies from the 1940s.I know there are pictures of such trains. But I wonder did they ever have trains. That have a mail car and a pull man car in the mix?I can put together such a train because I have 4 passenger cars.
Seaboard - See the Rock Island BL2 post........mail car in the consist. First Burlington photo, too. Would not imagine a Pullman in a mixed consist. Too slow, and usually going from "no where" to "no where". Pullmans were used in high density passenger corridors.
The Santa Fe 2-6-2 in above post has a sand dome large enough to spread sand from Chicago to Los Angeles !
Another ATSF mixed: http://digital.denverlibrary.o...ll22/id/58581/rec/14
Perhaps the perfect mixed: http://digital.denverlibrary.o...l22/id/58515/rec/135
Seaboard - See the Rock Island BL2 post........mail car in the consist. First Burlington photo, too. Would not imagine a Pullman in a mixed consist. Too slow, and usually going from "no where" to "no where". Pullmans were used in high density passenger corridors.
O.K. well thanks for your reply. These trains have a certain charm to them.
