My new Legacy Santa Fe Northern is a bit of a rebel – it doesn’t accept commands readily. Eventually, it comes around and does as instructed, but not right away.

It starts fine, and runs nicely. But it will not smoke for two or three minutes even though I press start for a couple of seconds and get the start talk. Also, if I command it to reverse direction, it will not do so right away even though the symbols (either << or >> ) are displayed on the remote. It may take two or three tries before it reverses, whether forward to reverse or reverse to forward.

Initially, it would not smoke at all, and then it started to smoke (super high setting!) and wouldn’t shut off. So I reset the engine and reloaded the module, and it worked much better, but still doesn’t respond to some commands immediately, as my other Legacy engines do.

Any suggestions on what to do, or what other commands to test to further narrow down the problem?

Thx!

Alex

A radio receiver board might need reseating or your antenna (handrails) might be finding ground.  If your other Legacy engines respond and operate properly, it is not your equipment you are using.   Set your meter to continuity and throw one probe of your meter on the handrails and the other probe on ground and see if you have continuity.

I have your locomotive and it is a great runner.

After running this beautiful SF Northern a couple more times with some of the commands not apparently responding immediately, it has now decided to be fully cooperative!

It smokes on command (lots!) and reverses direction without hesitation, and I did not do anything to it (just gave it a mean stare   ) I was ready to try Marty's suggestions first and see if there were any problems with the handrail connections, but it has not been necessary.

Hopefully, it will remain this way.

It is a beautiful engine and runs great. The smoke out of the whistle is propelled more forcefully than my other equally equipped Legacy engines. And the whistle - wow - it is the best!

Thanks for your help

Alex
