I wanted to show how I converted two MTH Intermodal flat cars to 2 rail with scale wheels and kadees. they turned out fantastic, with solid mounting points added for the couplers and new bolsters. First I removed some the little nubs that secured the stock MTH bolster plate on the underside of the car. I then had to cut out a bit of each end buffer to clear the Kadee coupler box, but the work is hidden once it's installed. Since I never throw away things I might need, I had a pair of Weaver underframes from some center flow hoppers. I cut off the ends to get the bolster and coupler mounts in one. I narrowed them from side to side to fit between the MTH side sills. I mounted them with Plastic Weld. Weaver trucks and wheels were used for the running gear. I retained the stock MTH fishbelly frame and weight. Lines up perfect to my Kadee height gauge. With the trailer load each car 15.5 ounces, just about right. When I order some more Weaver trucks I will put a heavier Die Cast set with steel wheels and the weight will go up to perfect. For now they ride on plastic Weaver trucks and plastic scale wheels.
Factory painted BAR TOFC in scale size is rare, so getting these done is a big addition to my fleet. I had originally planned to paint and decal a Weaver TOFC flat car for this trailer, but then I figured out how to do this!.
