I heard that Atlas has all needed to build all kinds of F units and have released just a small portion of what could be done. I was thinking that they might also have the tooling for an SD 40-2. but could be very wrong. I bought 1 unit of the SD40 release hopeing for the -2 but it never happened. Refreshing my memory it was about 2006 the 40s released and now almost a decade has passed. Do any know how hard it would be for Atlas to use what is in the vault to produce the -2 from what they have invested in the SD40. I am looking at my only SD40-2snoot sitting in its display behind my terminal and it is an overland model bought long time ago and wondering if I just need to look for a few more of them vs. waiting for a detailed Atlas -2. Heck, I am still waiting on a couple 8-40CWs for a few yrs now. I am almost at the end of my collecting of trains and need to cut some and round out the rest. I have been very bad that my layout hasn't moved as long as Atlas has been between releases of the SD40.

Phill,
Atlas has all the tooling for any "F" unit because they bought it from P&D Hobbies. They also have the tooling for the GP-9 which they bought from Red Caboose. I guess they are modifying it for the GP-7's.
I believe the SD-40 tooling was their own as no one had done it in plastic before. If I remember correctly there are some fairly significant difference between the 40 and 40-2 beside dynamic brake housing and truck side frames, but I could be wrong.

And with the other mfg's importers doing pleatheras of sd40-2, I doubt the model would be on their radar.

Yup, like length.
Part of Atlas' appeal is they have carved out a niche by doing certain models that no one else has done or does, like the SD40. I wouldn't be surprised if more road names are done since the tooling is there.
If Atlas isn't going to produce a snoot in the SD40 and still have the tooling for the SD 40 then it would be nice they say they will not do the -2 and then we can just be satisfied with the plain Jane SD40. U.P. again please, as I need to fill my train .
Would be awesome if Atlas did a Master line SD40-2 as well as a GP40-2. Or have MTH do an upgraded SD40-2 in the Premier line. Some of the more recent schemes would be welcome for me on these workhorses.
Lionel makes an SD40-2 and MTH makes an SD40-2. So it would be unlikely that Atlas O would make an SD40-2 immediately.
What could be possible is for MTH to make an improved SD40-2 with railroad specific details.

Andrew,
Would be all for MTH doing an upgraded SD40-2.
mike, most my plastics are MTH as Atlas didn't do much new era road diesels outside the 8-40B. I have had on order the C for years now. But if MTH can make the SD 40-2 look as good as the AC4400s and come DCC I'll be happy with that as waiting for Atlas is worse than watching corn grow.

When mth stops making under the wire handrails, then my opinion will change about them makiing an good accurate locomotivve. I purchased one mth diesel and was so disappointed that dumped it. Never again.

Until MTH can find a way to make the fuel tank larger and position the trucks closer to the pilots I will never buy an MTH SD40-2. It's one of their weaker efforts, detail-wise.
Lionel's aren't that much better but at least the fuel tanks are slightly larger.
The SD40 is a slightly different model, namely in length and trucks, but Atlas leaves MTH and Lionel in the dust when it comes to an SD40 (-2).
Yeah, hoping MTH will redo the SD40-2 at least to the level of the GEVO units (ES44)
