hey guys,
I'm filming a review for the new SD60e and I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what the two big vent extension pieces on either side of the area ahead of the smoke stack are for? Seems it's one of the many upgrades NS made and I Just want to make sure I have my facts straight. Thanks.

Those boxes are the air intake filters for the engine and altinater. The fan and grills right behind the cab is the dynamic brake grid and cooling fan.
First, the model is SD60e.
Second, those look like inertial filters for the air intake system. There are additional air filters inside that Central Air Compartment, which filter the intake air for the prime mover combustion.
Those extensions are part of NS's "split cooling" system and are also found on the GP59E units, along with a couple one-off upgrades they've done. There should also be an intercooler fan on a flat plate in place of the raised dust bin on those units. It's a small fan similar to those used on F units and early GP/SD power.
Edit: note the yellow fan on 9-1-1's roof, above those air intakes:

I can't get over how nice those paint schemes look and that might get me to buy both of them even though they aren't the road names I want. Unfortunately, my wife spent a bunch of money today, so I'll have to put it off for awhile.

Awesome, thank you. I was speculating that's what they were part of, but I wasn't certain. Kinda cool looking I think.
