Right now I have a basic Fastrack layout of a big loop roughly 4'x8'.  It's the outer loop of my table and as I have time and money to buy track I am going to fill in the center areas based on a layout someone suggested from a layout page they linked to in this forum.

 

There is only one operating track section and I switch it out when I work on my operating accessory testing.  A couple of times, I have seen sparks when putting a car on the track and even gotten a bit of a shock leaning across the track to pick up a tool while I had the transformer on testing an accessory.


Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

As previously posted, it's best to have power off when putting cars on the track to avoid shorts.

The other aspect to this question is the amperage we typically have on hand in the "O" gauge operating realm in relation to what we typically see in the HO & N kingdom. Most of us have power on tap from six amps on up to 20+; that's into welding territory so it's best to watch what you do in "O" compared to what we can sneak by with in HO & N. Remember, most house wiring is protected by 15 amp breakers.......
