Is there a website listing of the Lionel Postwar sets ?

My understanding is that there are out of print books on this subject. If I find one on the secondary market, can anyone tell me the format ?

For example, if one wanted to look at all sets that contain a 2037 loco, or a Silver Dawn rail car, is there an index/chart/ in the book(s) where one can easily find those sets/cars in the book or do I have to read all the set consists to identify which sets might have any particular item ? Ease of use of the information will help decide if I want to pay secondary market prices.

Thank you in advance !

Standard Catalog of Lionel Train Sets 1945-1969 by David Doyle is a decent source.  It was published in 2007, so the prices may not be as accurate with the market for trains that changes like the seasons.  There is an index in which sets are listed by engine number.   I believe I bought my book about a year ago through Amazon "used books"... it was a fair price and the book was in excellent condition!

Best of luck!

There used to be an on-line site that has what you want but I just clicked on it in my list of favorites and got ads instead so it must have been taken down.  Maybe it will work for you, the website address was www.lionel-train-set.com

I have an out-of-print Greenberg book that also does want you want as it has separate tables which enable you to look up what sets a specific engine was in or what sets a specific car was in.  Attached is a scan of the book’s cover.  It was printed in 1982 and the author’s name is T. Hood Simpson.  Maybe its available in the secondary market.

"Lionel-postwar train sets by year" was the best online SET source for years. There was also a non-related "MPC by year" site that was pretty good too.  My guess is that some photos were not theirs and both got shut down rather than go to court over it. Unfortunately they bought and sold on the same site so the money factor took it beyond fair use comments etc.. likely made them an easy target to go after.

They both vanished about the same time, and about 2-3 years back.  There were also "wayback machine" saved pages but I can't find them there anymore either.

Greenberg's Guide to Lionel Trains 1945-1969: Cataloged Sets is the most accurate and scholarly work on the subject of cataloged Postwar sets. The online sources have errors and are incomplete. You can find this often on "Our Favorite Online Auction".

The AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO LIONEL'S PROMOTIONAL OUTFITS 1960 - 1969  is the beyond a doubt most accurate and scholarly work ever written on the subject of Postwar Lionel Trains. It only covers uncataloged sets 1960-69. The work is outstanding and fascinating. I hope we'll see more similar painstakingly researched guides from these folks in the future.

Greenberg did offer a Uncataloged Postwar Set guide many,30? years ago.

Yep..The best one I'd seen online. I hope its all there. It should be every last page . I really hate the new WB format now.. I bet I searched 50 times (or tried to anyhow). I used to spend a lot of time there a decade ago, and it was much easier to use imo.

The newer set/id site was only on line a few months before Ross's vanished. Aggressive copywriting was my though because some photos look borrowed to me.  I thought maybe it was just a format change too, but no such luck. None of us are getting younger either, we might have just lost "a good Un".
