I have an update to this ealier thread that I thought some would be interested in.  My phone rang today with an unknown number on the caller ID.  When I answered, it was Stout Auctions calling to see if I wanted to buy a lot from the March 8th auction.  It seems I was the runner up bidder on a lot and the winning bidder couldn't pay so it was offered to me for my last bid.  I found out in my conversation with the gentleman that this internet bidder (who was newly registered to bid) won about 50 lots and said that he'd need several months to come up with the money.  In talking to him I mentioned our observations here on the forum about items won on Saturday on Stout that were up on eBay on Sunday.  He then told me that this guy is one of those people auctioning Stout items that hadn't been paid for yet.  He said he's going to look into legal action against this guy and will be notifying eBay to get him banned there as well.

Makes you wonder what will happen to the folks who won the auctions for these lots on eBay and won't be getting their trains.  I hope this guy will do the right thing and refund the winning bidders money and not just rip them off.  I wonder if we'll ever know.  I hope none of us were taken as I know a few of us were watching these eBay auctions.

By the way, I took Stout up on his offer to buy the lot that I originally missed out on.  In fact, I was really regretting not bidding higher to get the lot as I really wanted it and I have been back on their site looking at the pictures thinking about the "one that got away".  So this surprise phone call really made my day.

John,

Good Job!!!! I made a comment that a few took the wrong way about a person doing Federal time for such as this. As for Stout contacting eBay...That's fantastic. Except all the guy has to do is wait a while and open a new eBay Store under another name.

Would it not be a shame for someone to contact, The USPS Postmaster General. It's a wait and see type of thing. Rest assured that it's not over yet.

Thanks John for the follow up. I posted the original observation, and was tracking the listings I had come across. Upon coming back from vacation, it looks like all the ebay listings have ended. Here's a PDF of the spreadsheet I had set up. I started it just out of curiosity on the profit margin the seller would realize. Only a few I had found went through to completion in auction format, and the results were mixed. I figured buyers premium, estimate on shipping on the stout lots versus the cost of selling on ebay.

Attached is a PDF of the spreadsheet, along with a couple images of one of the sets which used the same Stout photos in the ebay listing.

As was stated in my original post, nothing against selling what is yours. But this guy was selling what was not yet his.
