I bought a used Lionel extended vision caboose which has a Seuthe smoke unit that doesn't work. I took it apart and there is no wick. Is this normal for a Seuthe?

I wouldn't think so because how else would it wick up the fluid to the heater? Maybe somebody else has a comment but that's my thoughts.
I have been tought by the guys on here. You need wicking. Is the resistor working?
I don't think the Seuthe has a wick. Think more like boiler. I have not found Lionel
smoke fluid to be good for Seuthes. LGB fluid id better

The Seuthe smoke units do not have any wicking, they have a small tube that is in the center. You can not use Lionel or MTH smoke fluid in a Seuthe unit. It appears to be too thick. Even a thin as the Lionel or MTH appears to be the Seuthe fluid is even thinner. Seuthe smoke fluid will work in a Lionel or Mth engine and it has a nice output but you will go through the fluid much quicker.

A picture would help, because there are seuthe like smoke units with a resistor and wick, and then there are the traditional ones like Ron mentioned that look like a tube with a small tube in the center. G
I've never seen a Seuthe smoke unit with a wick, though I allow for the possibility for one to exist. The ones I'm familiar with are the common ones that are the ones with the small heating element in the center of basically an empty chamber.
Gaugemaster has a lot of them, but I don't see any that look like they would have a wick. There sure are a lot of variations in the line!
Lionel has a number of Caboose smoke units that use a resistor and batting, but no piston or fan. Smoke drifts out. So what ever they are called. Since he said it was a Lionel caboose, it may not be a Williams Like sleuth. Picture would help. G
I did not realize that the Lionel smoking caboose used a Seuthe smoke unit, but I have had one of those apart and there was some wick in them. If that is indeed a Seuthe unit, then that possibility has been realized.
There was a Mike Reagan video on Lionel smoke units a while ago that said Lionel had used Seuthe smoke units. I've never seen a Lionel unit with a Seuthe smoke unit, but I'm going to believe Mike.
Keep in mind it's easy to melt the top of a caboose around the chimney if you are running at command voltage of 18 v.
I have never seen a wick in a seuthe unit. But who knows???
When I go to the Lionel parts website they call the smoke unit a Seuthe of course it also says no longer available.
Here is a picture of the Lionel Seuthe. They are normally 6V units. I would go to Bachman or Williams parts dealer for one. The Williams Brass used these driven from a 6V Constant Voltage board, or a large 5watt 10 ohm dropping resistor if used off track voltage.
I guess there is not a term other than "smoke Unit" for the other style of smoke units used in Lionel Diners and Cabooses. These have a chamber, wick, and resistor, and smoke just wafts out. Maybe we can call them "Waft Units". G

That Lionel smoke unit has no wick, that's the one with the empty chamber and the heating element down the middle.
