This evening, the postman rang my doorbell (twice of course.) and handed me a nice heavy box. Inside of this was the set of SP Sharknose locomotives that I have been eagerly awaiting for the past few weeks.

As is normal for Lionel products, they were beautifully packed, and had survived the rigors of traveling across the Atlantic without any damage.

Once I had unpacked and lubricated them, I placed them on the track, fitted a 9V battery, programmed them into my Legacy system and filled them up with Mega-Steam.

They both look and sound wonderful. The 'Daylight' colour scheme is very striking indeed on these locomotives.

But the big surprise came when I started them running and turned on the smoke. Woo! Do these engines smoke! The smoke was of such a volume and thickness that they almost disappeared behind a traveling smokescreen.

All of my Legacy engines smoke well, but these are in a class of their own. I sat and watched these engines run around  until the atmosphere in my train room could no longer support human life. These may prove to be the first engines that I will run with the smoke set on 'Low'.

Now I just have to wait for my set of Daylight coaches to arrive, and I'll have another beautiful passenger train to convey the inhabitants of my O-gauge world to their chosen destinations.

In case you haven't guessed, I am one happy bunny tonight. Thank You Lionel.

Nicole:  Congrats on your new smokers.  I think they might be banned in many public establishments around here.  New trains, like new cars, are at their best, first time out.  I know your excitement.  With me, it's the sound, especially the steam whistles, when they have a lonesome sound.  "when you hear that lonesome whistle blow"  Reminds me of a song long ago.  Be sure to send out a pic when your consist arrives, so we can all envy your new train.

Nicole,

Does this mean we can expect the Daylight to arrive in NYC. Wow! That's one heck of a trip. Congratulations.

Hi Nicole, I thought it was difficult waiting for my trains to arrive on the West Coast (Oregon) from the East.  But you have to get it across the Atlantic as well.  I'm not going to complain any more.......OK maybe just a few times.  Congrats on your new SP Sharks.  Have you ever posted photo's of your layout?  I would sure like to see some.  Have fun with your new engines and thank you for posting.

This isn't the Shark Nicole is talking about but you have to admire the design.  I believe at the time Baldwin hired an architect for the design.

Pennsy BP 20,  a Weaver offering a few years ago.   IMO, a Layout magnet, that draws attention.  Have fun with your Sharks, Nicole.   These are also non-smoker Sharks.

Thanks everyone.

Lee, that was hilarious.  I used to have a Shagreen cigarette case. Perhaps it was related to your friend?

I'll take some proper photographs in a week or two when my coaches arrive.  My layout is also mostly dismantled at present, as I'm working on re-building it to use every available inch in the room.

In the meantime, here is a very hurried, and poorly shot, wobbly video that I grabbed this afternoon. The smoke was set on low for this.
