My big heat gun, which is laughingly called the Master-Mite, only comes out for bigger jobs. The hot air rework tool with the small nozzle does almost all the wiring tasks, it's the perfect size for the job.
Thanks again for all of the suggestions. I don't foresee me doing anything 'big' as some described here. No more than splicing some wires once in a while.
My soldering gun is the one shown above. Here are my soldering irons. The R.S. one is smallish - 15 and 30 watts. The smaller of the 2 older irons has a 50W rating on it. the bigger one doesn't have any markings.
For the little that I need to do this I'll try the irons first.
thanks again - walt

Mr Union Pacific posted:I use an Oxygen Acetylene cutting torch to shrink mine...just kidding. Actually, I have used a bic lighter for years and never had a problem.
With rosebud tip?
Now to all:
I got one of these Heat Guns during the closeouts Radio Shack had when they went bankrupt the first time. This one is more than RS's regular prices ($32.99, now on sale for $26.xx), but shows the heat shrink tip it comes with. I got mine for around $10, IIRC. If you can find a RS that's liquidating you might get a good deal. It's really a pretty nice heat gun.
Hi Walt. I just picked this one up from Amazon for $25. Used it last night and it worked great. It's all the size and heat you need for heat shrink.
Thanks Chris!!!!

If you work on Postwar Lionel, a heat gun is great for freeing stuck pellet type smoke unit pistons, getting the cap off, and cleaning out the smoke pot.
I just did this a little while ago.
