Unfortunately, this is one of those issues where pseudo-science and pseudo-scientists have flooded the internet with nonsense (just Google it and you'll see what I mean).  I'm not sure whether lurking in your question about smart meters was any sort of concern about those types of questions.  And since this is a forum about model railroads, this isn't the place to have an extended discussion about it.

Depending on the smart meter, they often utilize WiFi or broadband (cell phone) type connections, often low power to a nearby antenna positioned on a utility pole.  So its hard to see how adding another device utilizing those frequencies will interfere with other common devices like motion lights or garage door openers (maybe if they are in very close proximity??).  I did have a problem with one of several GFI breakers in my breaker box that kept tripping (the only one of several to do so) - the utility service guy told me that they had some reports of similar issues.  I swapped out the GFI with a new one and no problem since.  Hard for me to see how low power RF would affect the GFI - and then only that one breaker and not the others or the new one...??
