i have an 027 gauge #6-8900 famous american railroad series santa fe hudson. i just put some new smoke inside of it, and when the smoke unit started working i noticed that it emits a red glow when i run it and the smoke works. is that normal?

Nope, not normal.
Shut it down.

what could it be tho?
You should never see any visible light from the smoke resistor. You risk flames if you see visible light in the stack.
My guess would be to much voltage to the smoke unit resistor caused by a failed voltage regulator. Gunrunner John would know more about that than I would.
I sold my #8900 set long ago, but I believe it's just like a PW smoke set-up with no voltage regulator involved. I had this same issue on my 28079 "Texas" 2-10-4 a few years back. A new resistor solved the "flames out the stack" scenario.
Like everyone has said, this is Not normal and you could start a fire if you keep running it in this condition.
thanks guys. really is scaring me. so now i wont run it till i get it fixed.
