From MTH.
I recently had this problem with a smoke unit on my MTH 4-6-2. I removed the top of the smoke unit and took a small need applicator and dropped a couple drops of synthetic oil down under the fan. It is perfect but it works so give that a whirl before buying a new smoke unit from MTH.
Most any MTH ASC should be able to supply a fan motor, or as Barry says, you can get them right from the source. The General uses the standard MTH motor.
As has been stated, I will reconfirm, I have had the same and a little drop will do you of labelle or appropriate oil. Quiets it right down for me...............
Buy some Eliminator smoke fluid from JT's Megasteam. After about the 3rd application the squealing should be gone.....I have tried it multiple times with multiple engines and it works and works well.

Thanks for the MTH answer. However, I called them before I posted and they said they no longer stock that part. If someone has some insider info and thinks I got a bad answer please let me know.
Or will any MTH ASC Sell me a part?
I know about the lubing of the motor but she is smelling electrical. I want to get it out of there.
People don't seen to believe me how well this works. The Eliminator is a lighter weight smoke fluid that will get work it's way back into the fan and lubricate it.
This is before, is this the way your smoke unit sounds;
This is after my third application about 4 minutes later.

I have some smoke unit motors and fans. If you want one of each, send $10 for the parts and shipping. Email is in my profile.

I have done that 3 times. Lasts about 5 minutes and then screams again.

The smoke unit in this engine is a heating element in a box with wick. The fan blows across the box and up the smoke stack. The smoke fluid would never reach the motor.
If anyone has a part number I would appreciate it.
Also do you guys just stuff the wick in the box or do you wrap it around the element?
The fan motor part is BE-0000041 $6 MSRP. The whole smoke unit is Not in Stock. They can be rebuilt, even if you burn up the electronics.
The problem is MTH only sells smoke unit in the 5 pack now, so you need to buy 5 at $6ea.
So I would take Luke up on his offer since he offered first. I also stock smoke parts including gaskets and wick and I rebuild damaged electronics.
I am a believer of sticking the wick between the 2 element units. The new wick is like a rope cord more then the typical wick.
This is PS-1 (over 15 years old) and there are bearings that get shot and or worn. So if the oil did not resolve it replace the motor. G
I just came across apost by Marty Fitzhenry. Seems that he feels this Mabuchi motor is better and says it fits in some MTH models. Should I be ordering this?
Lionel part number 6101154130.
Usually folks put MTH motors in Lionel, not the other way around. Keep searching on Lionel Fan motors
You also are going to pay $10 Lionel shipping for the part, so do you want to pay $10 or $17 for a fan motor. G

GGG,
Here is Marty's post. I am confused now. https://ogrforum.com/t...88#18465020689233988
2013 post and he did not endorse over it, but stated that one model is similar and that Lionel got hold of a better motor, then previous Lionel motors.
This has been a back and forth subject for a while. Soooo, do what you think is best. But if you order 1 Lionel fan motor you will pay at least 17.45 delivered. IF you try to buy one MTH motor pack you will get 5 at $39.95 deliver.
IF you go to your hobby shop you get one for $6 plus tax, and if you go to Luke, one for $10 delivered. G
