Can anyone recommend what they feel is the best smoke fluid to use in Lionel trains having liquid smoke elements? The top brands seem to be Lionel smoke fluid, Protosmoke, and Mega Smoke. Also, will it cause a problem using small amounts of smoke fluid in the Postwar Lionel engines that still have the pill type smoke elements? I prefer not to convert my post war engines to liquid smoke.

Lionel recommends using their Premium Fluid in their modern engines. I personally find it to produce the most smoke in mine.
However, many do swear by Megasteam and it offers many scents.
Yes, you can use fluid in the postwar pill units. Just use a few drops I usually start with 4 and a max of 8 depending on the smoke unit's capacity.
Pats trains makes their own brand. Excellent product available also in a 8 oz bottle. Been using it my this last year.
BTW I haves used Lionel MTH, Megasteam and 20 years ago lamp oil. No problems from any of the.
I like the holiday scents , vanilla and orsnge.
JT,S Mega steam excellent and many scents to choose from!

Don't go complaining to Dean if the Megasteam gunks up your resistor!
Mike Reagan formulated the best combination when he created the Lionel Premium (He hates the starter set stuff.) Go ahead - ask him.

Ditto!
Endless postings on this. Do a search function if you truly want all the opinions. But they are just that. Opinions.
I get pretty good results with baby oil, once you get past the talcum powder smell... You also get a pint or so for a couple bucks, which is considerably less than $10 for 2 ounces of smoke fluid...

In my experience, Lionel Premium Smoke Fluid is far and away the best.

I have tried Mega-Steam. In my Lionel locomotives, it smells awful. and does not produce as much smoke. I have no idea why, and this is in no way an attempt to criticize Mega-Steam or start a flame war about "My smoke fluid is better than your smoke fluid!"
In my Marx tinplate locomotives, however, Mega-Steam works and smells beautifully, and for those locomotives it's all I use.

No conversion is necessary. I use Lionel Premium Smoke Fluid in all my postwar steamers. Works great.
