Most instructions for new locos that smoke state to add 10 to 15 drops of smoke fluid before running the loco.  The fluid that comes with a new loco has avery small bottle and the drops are usually very small (depending upon the hole created by cutting off the end of the bottle or jamming a pin into the spout).  Now, if you are using MTH fluid with a glass stopper and rubber top to squeeze out the fluid, the drops are much larger, hence the 10 to 15 drop recommendation might prove to be too much fluid.  Is there an actual recommendation, like in mm or ounces or other measurement without being unspecified droplets?

I have never heard anything but drops for the recommended fluid measurements? No matter what drop size I get, I follow the 10-15 drops method (or 15-20 for a new engine). After running for a few minutes if it isn't smoking well I add another 10 drops or so. I have a needle bottle I use, so I get the fairly small drops as well.

This has worked for me for at least 3 years with no problems unless the engine's smoke unit had problems. Which just happened for the first time a couple weeks ago. After a little fiddling, some great assistance from the OGR forum members here and loading a new PS3 file, all is better now.

It depends on the unit. Not all reserve chambers are identical, so its not an exact measurement. Even the denseness of packing would cause variance of a few drops let alone size of the drops

I do it this way, dry (like rebuilt, or not used for a year or more) resting on paper towel, 5-10 drops wait 5-10 min. check towel, test. repeat till it leaks or stops smoking from too much fluid. Once leaks settle run it till it smokes again, then stops smoking. Repeating with measured drops give you a "wet" measurement. For me, this varies from 4-5 on a PW General to 1 1/2 whole droppers full of fluid.  .
