Hello! I bought this diesel awhile ago and the smoke unit never worked but the seller refunded me half the cost so I’ve never thought much about it. But now it’s bugging me. It’s an old Lionel TMCC BNSF Dash-9 6-18253 and it’s in great shape minus the smoke unit. I run off a conventional transformer so maybe that’s the issue? My MTH diesels smoke fine but maybe TMCC needs more voltage? I’ve replaced the wicking in the unit and cleaned it up well and even had it sit on the track for awhile with max power and not a hint of smoke

Measure your heating element with your meter and look for 27 ohm. If you see that value, check to see if the element has the sleeve covering it. If it does, cut it off. I do Lionel work with your unit and they smoke very good.
Here's a video Mike R did when he was with Lionel.

It helped with my old TMCC's.
If your running conventional you will want to be at about 12-13vac on the track to get decent smoke. The mod video will greatly improve the performance. Although the fan motor will pulse in neutral, no way to fix that besides runnjng in command.
if you need help reach out to me at mreagan@twtrainworx.com
thanks,

Gotta get it working first!
Holy Moses boys! I actually got it working. I have no idea what happened but when it was on the track with power, I was unscrewing the smoke cover to see if the element was hot and the screwdriver hit something and threw the engine into reverse and BAM! Smoke unit started right up. It doesn’t come out of the top very well though, mostly comes out from the sides or underneath when the body is put on. Is that normal?
That is NOT normal Jack, you are probably missing the gasket in the smoke unit or you don't have the smoke output properly mated with the stack on the shell.

Hmmm... the gasket is there and it’s properly secured
Something isn't secured or lined up, the smoke is designed to come out the stack for obvious reasons.
