My K-Line PRR A5 wasn't chuffing.  This will be my first ever repair.  We added some fluid and blew down the stack and it worked for about 20 feet then dropped out again.  The cam is moving up and down but nothing is puffing.  There is clearly smoke building in the stack.

So I took it apart.  Does this rubber sleeve on the cam look normal?  Is it supposed to be up over the top of the metal arm?

these puffer units are notorious for wearing on the pivot end (which you can't see in your pic). when the pivot end gets sloppy a lot of the lift action at the piston end is lost. this can be repaired by squeezing the pivot holes (they are split) to tighten them up and this will give you more puff. the pic is a similar unit

Spring is there.  I think it was just stuck.  Cleaned it up real good and it seems to work now.  While we were in there, Gunrunner John taught me how to upgrade the headlight to an LED.  Also, the headlight was programmed like a Diesel.  We changed that back to Steam so the front headlight stays on in both directions.

While I was there, John gave me the parts and confidence to make the firebox flicker.  That should be a fun project.
