Is there something on the rear missing from my new Southern observation car?

drumhead ?
Yes.
It sure looks like there should be a drum head there, but maybe they skimped and re-used the same structure without including the drum head? It obviously looks bare without it with those 2 holes.
Was the back of the observation car pictured in the catalog to show off a drum head?
If I otherwise liked the set and just wanted to know if they screwed up and missed a part on mine during manufacturing, I'd try to figure out if all of them were like that, or just mine (ask Dealer to check another one? or ask Lionel if they included it in the design?).

I assume that this is Lionel or MTH product. If so, the catalogues/archives/products are viewable online and you might look the car up and see if there is a drumhead shown or mentioned in the description. Not all real observation cars had them.
I wouldn't even try to replace it, I'd get a Tomar lighted drumhead.

Missing on mine too.
Too bad those awful green windows weren't missing. Why does Lionel continue to use those? Can't they find clear window strips?
Save 'em for a modern era Metra offering or something.

I agree. They are definitely getting switched out.

Just trying to hide the fact that there are no figures inside. Taking a cue from Weaver. No figures, no drumheads, whats next? No lighting?

Surprisingly, there are figures! I was shocked.

These heavyweights do have figures, it is the 21" streamlined cars that do not have figures.
What they don't have is that dreaded "Thumbtack" uncoupler hanging down!
