There are two ways of controlling volume on a Lionel TMCC or Legacy engine. One is via the potentiometer (knob) under the locomotive, and the other is through the remote. Using the TMCC or Legacy remote, press the #3 key (the Legacy remote might show you the volume up icon instead), which will raise the volume of the unit. Most locomotives have 4-5 volume levels.

Is this a Legacy or TMCC locomotive? How about a model number?
I experienced the same issue earlier this evening with a Lionel U30c with RS4. I hit the reset, #1 button, and tried to find the volume pot on the engine itself. It was really loud the last time I ran it...
Hello John,
Lionel Legacy SD70ACE #6-28377
Try using Legacy to raise volume. Or reset R4LC. If that doesn't work, you can check the volume pot. Should read 0 to 10K from center to each outer as you rotate the knob. I think there have been bad pots. G
Are you running command or conventional? Are all the sounds low, or just the prime mover and crew-talk?
You do know that the background volume can be adjusted separately on the Legacy remote. Hit AUX1 and then Volume Up and see if that helps.
John,
I will try raising the volume with the remote.
Thanks
Newer legacy locos actually have two volume levels via the remote, vol up repeated for overall sound volume and AUX1-vol up, AUX1-vol up, AUX1 vol up,.......for background sounds
One more way to solve your problem. On your Legacy remote, push horn one time then keep pushing the one (volume up) on the keypad and that will bring it back.
loco does not respond to volume control on remote. any suggestions???
You may have a genuine problem with the sound, it's getting to where it's time for someone to look at it.

Did you do the reset and check the pot? You can also reseat any connectors on the sound boards. G
