Sound Issues

I recently purchased the Lionel Fallen Flag series of the Nickel Plate Road. The engines (6-18505) include a working and a dummy unit. The dummy unit (401) contains the railsounds. The sounds are sporadic, so I took it to a show recently to get repaired. The man who repaired it can only get the sound to work when the body isn't on, and it's loud. As soon as he attached the body the sound would stop working. Does anyone have any advice on troubleshooting?
