OK, I realize that some PS2 engines use 5V and some use 3V and the two don't mix. But apparently not all 3V sound sets are the same?

I checked the loco I'm trying to update and it's a 3V system. I downloaded another sound set which is also 3V. When I try to install the DCS Loader tells me they're incompatible.  ?????

How does one figure out what sound sets go with what? Is there a comprehensive guide somewhere?

Thanks

sometimes the loader recognizes the wrong voltage and say 5 volt when in fact it is a 3 volt sound file ! you have to try again UNTIL THE LOADER PROGRAM correctly  identified it as the 3 volt if in turn you are loading or downloading  the correct file you intended to download or up load to the engine!

>>>The later 3 volt PS2 boards accommodate 2 Meg sound files. However, the older 3 volt PS2 boards will allow on 1 Meg files.<<<

Thanks - I realize this now but my point is, the MTH Protosound website list them all as 3V, not by size.

Maybe I can go by catalog date. Do you know when the 2mb 3v boards replaced the 1mb boards in production?

by trial & error I figured out that the transition occurred right the 2008 catalog volume 1 or 2. Knowing this, I looked for the newest Premier sound set that is under 1 mb.  The Premier sound sets tend to sound a little better even at this primitive stage. I changed one of my steamers and love the results. I've downloaded some diesel sound sets and will utilize whichever one(s) sound best to my ear.

@GG yeah, thanks but I'm well past that now. I'm practically a sound set Guru .

Having newer, sexier horns & whistles in so many of my older MTH locos now is a real treat.

So many of my earlier PS2 diesels had exactly the same sound set regardless of what kind of locomotive they were supposed to be. I've given them all unique sounds.

I also had a number of earlier PS2 diesels that all had the same "tugboat" horn even though the model clearly has a multi-note or "chime" horn mounted on top.  Fixed those too.

I've probably done close to a dozen locos so far and it feels almost like I had a dozen new ones.
