I like the looks of Lionel's Southern 21" passenger cars, but not sure they are in the right era for me.

For what I can find on the internet (not much info - several pictures with no dates), it appears that Southern streamlines cars came either stainless(Bud) or possibly painted (PS) and they were basically silver cars.

At some time Southern added the round emblem on the side of the car at both ends of the car. I think 1960's? Is this right?

I think the black roofs were added to the PS and maybe to the Bud cars once all the rusting showed up (1960'S ?)

Any way I sure would like to know more information about the black roofs on streamlined cars and emblems at the door.

Joe,

Your best info would come from fellow forum member Larry Neal.  He use to be at the NC Transportation Museum.  Look him up.

Now I am not sure what excursion period you want to replicate.  If you are looking at the time the Claytor brothers there is the book "Steams Camelot" by Jim Wrinn.  About the cars there is the "Southern Railway Color Guide ... ."

What I can tell you is that after the derailment behind 611 May 18, 1986 ended the use of heavyweight cars in excursion.  Also if I recall from discussions the black roof was a shop specific thing, but not sure.  Then there is the thing of a fluted steel sheet roof or a smooth steel sheet roof.  And to the best of my recall, the only painted streamline cars Southern had were the dark green ones that came from Central of Georgia.  MTH did replicate many of these including the Dome car #1602.

But am sure larry will have answers.

Ron
