What's going on with smoke pellets? Did Trainz stop manufacturing them? Smoke pellets, whether old Lionel stock or the Trainz version, are nearly nonexistent out there. What's going on??

I can't speak for every maker out there, but I know for Trainz it's been finding a source for the chemicals. Once there's a new supplier things will change.
I resurrected my Lionel trains in 2020 (from the early fifties), disassembled and cleaned out the entire wax mess from the smoke unit of my 2026. I added a spring, new piece of rope fiber in the cup (cut one length in half to fit), and a new gasket between the top of the heater and the inside metal shell of the loco. The nichrome heater was good so I kept that.
I started using JT's Mega Steam fluid and it works better than I remember the SP tablets ever working without the mess.

I enjoy the pellets, but use both. Pellets are easier to handle when you have two young boys playing with your postwar stuff. More smoke fluid gets on the engine than in it.
Bill at S&W has the pellets in stock. Just got two bottles from him.
Who is S&W? I'm not familiar with them.

They are a part supplier. They're a forum sponsor listed at the top of the page. They're selling smoke pellets for $15 a bottle. Here is the link.
