Earlier this week I posted a photo of a speaker removed from a just-purchased 20-year old engine and said I was getting significant sound distortion and that I planned to replace the speaker with a new one and to also replace two 1.2v Ni-CD rechargeable batteries and see if I could eliminate the sound distortion.
I am posting here again to say that the new speaker and batteries have fixed the sound distortion. The original speaker was 4 ohm, 3 watt, 50 mm. The new speaker has the same specs although a different form/fit ... I did have to jigger the tender speaker retaining mount to get the speaker to fit on my old tender. I am attaching photos of the old speaker showing flaking around the periphery of the magnet which I believe is symptomatic of a failing speaker. I do this in event other OGR folks might have similar sound distortions and flaking speaker magnets. At least for me, replacing the speaker was 'the fix.' The new rechargeable batteries are extra insurance for extended operation.

Tom
