Hi not sure where to post this, looked in scenery but no luck.

Can you recommend a cheap/reasonably priced spray gun to paint these locos I have just bought?

I have no experience with spray apart from the can type.

Backwoods recommend a gun rather than cans to get a better finish.James

The term is airbrush for the small handheld units. If cheap is operative word then check out Harbor freight. Others will dismiss this but they have a useable single stage unit that sells for between 4 and 7 bucks depending on if its on sale or not. Its a knockoff of a Paasche Model H with a few compromises. Harbor freight also sells a two stage unit for about 20 bucks but the learning curve is a little steeper. If you can paint using a rattle can you can get use a single stage unit with better results due to the finer spray.

I have the first HF airbrush Norton posted and it works fine and you can not beat the price. It even includes the fitting to go from airbrush hose to pipe so you can connect to a regular air compressor, which this fitting alone would cost as much as the whole kit if you look at other brands. I am looking at getting some extra jars to make switching colors a bit easier. I never did figure out what the deal is with the second, larger jar included in the kit , as it does not include a siphon hose to reach the bottom of it. I just keep thinner or water in it depending on what I am spraying and use it to clear the unit after I spray. Cleaning the unit immediately after use every time is a must with any airbrush as they will clog very quickly. The other thing to know about airbrushing is that the paint has to be extremely thin- about as thick as water, or the paint will simply not flow. Multiple light coats is the ticket.

I have that first one pictured too. Works just fine for me....cheap too!

But if you use really good spray cans you can skip the air brush. Check out Tamiya paints and primers. VERY fine spray will cover NO detail.....in fact it will make any mistakes show really well. This is all Tamiya paint........

Great finishes can easily be done with spray cans......I have 3 air brushes.....my high dollar unit has not been used in 20 years.....tired of cleaning it and buy replacement parts.

I use the HF dual action, have for years, and it works just great. It has a fine tip needle so its great for weathering and painting. I do not spray acrylics so I can't tell you how well it works for that. Usually you need a medium or large needle for acrylics as the fine tip clogs too easily.
