Last Spring I purchased a Lionel 6-18000 B6 steam switcher.  It was listed as used but the wheels and pick-ups were so clean I doubt it had any more track time than simply testing.  While running it this evening I noticed squealing off and on.  The type of squealing you might hear from a bad bearing.  I checked all the lube points and found them to be sufficiently oiled and lubed.  On my bench I cannot determine if the squealing is coming from the armature or from the drive shaft.

I would imagine a new motor can be had.

Hard to tell what you have.  Some of the early TAS, (Train America Studio), electronics had an electronic squeal, that to some, was an issue.

Gear box worm gear needs to be opened.  Often the grease has hardened and is moved away from the worm and it's meshing gear.

Some ideas,  Best wishes with your project,

I would check the side rods, smoke unit lever, and the bearings on each end of the armature shaft.  Finally check the axles for the wheels.  Maybe the oil just has not penetrated the spot that needs it yet.  Did you oil the tender trucks?  I have this loc and its a nice engine for its time.  Smooth runner despite it being pulmor powered.

Had the same issue with the same engine I got secondhand.  I went through and oiled every spot I could find, even the oil wick in the motor, still squealed.  Finally narrowed it down and a drop of oil on the motor armature did the trick.  The whole time it was visible in the cab, I didn't need to take it apart.  I also assumed the wick oiled that part, but I guess the oil didn't make it's way up to where the armature sits in the motor cover.

It’s definitely the motor bearings. Sometimes a tiny drop of oil won’t do. If you could pull out the motor to get to the bottom bearing that would ensure proper oil gets to the bearing.

If the previous action doesn't work, I will have to take it apart and do the deed.

It seems to have done the trick !  Thank you.
