Stand alone fan driven smoke units

The one Marty recommends is probably the best for the application as it will put out prodigious quantities of smoke.  You can also use one of the Lionel models that has the 5V regulator for the fan, but it's not going to smoke like the PS/1 model.

 

Iant to put a fan driven smoke unit in a brass caboose.  Is there a part number for thee MTH PRoto 1 smoke unit?? And does anyone stock these, I operate in Command...

That's an awfully large smoke unit for a caboose!  I use MTH HO smoke units for a caboose, I add a small adjustable power supply to control the smoke output.  The PS/1 smoke unit will make it look like your caboose is on fire!

 

Is there a part numer for the H.O. unit and how would you drop the voltage??

The HO smoke unit is AA-1600000.  I use a small AC-DC power module to supply the voltage, and I use a few diodes to drop the voltage to about 2.5-3.0 volts for the little fan motor.  The smoke unit works best in a caboose around 4.5-6.0 volts, depending on how much smoke you want.

Do you have a photo of the effect you're trying to create?

If your referencing my project, I don't have a photo but what I'm going to try to mimic is 2 pipes off either side of the flat car with small holes drilled into the pipes at a 45 degree angle. The smoke  unit will be at the back of the car while the pipes are at each end protruding from both sides. The smoke should look like a spray pattern as it comes out the drilled holes while the train is in motion.

For your application, you'll want a lot more smoke, the MTH smoke unit will be a good choice. 

Yes, your project.  I was watching some youtube video of different weed sprayers in action - some had guys on top spraying upward at trees, others downward-sideway sprays like I think what you're after.

As you get further along I'd be interested in seeing your progress on how you do plumbing to evenly split the smoke multiple ways, how you refill the smoke unit (since presumably you can't just squirt it down the stack(!), and if/how you intermittently activate the unit since presumably you don't want to spray when passing a station platform, grade crossing, whatever.
