I need some help in selecting the correct paint for painting the cab roof of a steam engine as well as the tender deck. I'm not sure if it should be a red or iron oxide or some other color. Your help is greatly appreciated.

1) What railroad is the prototype?
2) What time frame/era are you trying to duplicate?
The railroads are the CB&Q and the C&NW in late steam. I don't believe either had such painting it's just something that I might like to do.

I know nothing about C&NW but, the CB&Q Hudsons and Northerns had "red cab roof top" right through to the end of steam. I will research tomorrow what color should be used, as all my CB&Q steam locomotives have that cab roof top treatment.
Jack and Bob, was there a reason for painting them red, other than it looks "purty"?

Did you ever get a color?
