Hello, I'm trying to figure out the difference of say a 322, 322AC, 322DC. I can't find an answer reading through Greenberg's books. General question...will they work with a AC transformer (ZW, etc)

Anything numbered with a “DC” will only operate under DC power. It has a permanent magnet field coil. The others have universal motors and operate on AC or DC. A ZW would work fine on those although I would not recommend running wide open since the ZW has slightly higher max voltage than AF transformers of the early 50’s.
In addition to those engines marked as AC or DC in the cab number, many 332 and 342 numbered engines made in 1948 and 1949 are DC only. If you have an engine stamped with one of these numbers the only way to be sure is to look at the motor and see if it has a wire wound field or a permanent magnet field.
