It's that special time for us again, Sunday, which means it's time for STEAMday Sunday, but this time it's  also St. Patrick's Day, so it would be great if you would post a photo and/or video showing a steam locomotive with the color green in it's livery. Of course, you can also post photos/videos of  steamers of any color.

Please remember to comply with the Forum Terms of Service, especially the rule to post only photos and videos you have taken or those in which you have the written  permission of the owner to post.

Now, let the fun begin.

I will start us off with a video showing my green MTH PS2 Railking Southern steamer with a Pacific wheel arrangment:

Later today, I will post a video of another steamer that I promised to post last Sunday.

Happy St. Patricks Day,

Arnold

A new J3a Hudson type, special release shows off her stuff on the club track at the JR Junction Hobby Shop during Hudson Fest last year. These engines were built by MTH with special detailing design assistance  from Pat Norcross. As of now, JR Junction is still planning another Hudson Fest event this summer

Top ‘o the morning, StDaySun people!  Sorry Arnold, the leprechauns didn’t bring me a green steam loco, but since I showed a lot of green on SwSat yesterday, I’m going to share some memories from October 4, 2019 today.

My son in law and I traveled to the Strasburg Railroad in Strasburg, PA to ride behind Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 no.611.  She is a truly magnificent machine, don’t miss an opportunity to see her!  N&W 4-8-0 no. 475 and Strasburg RR 2-6-0 no. 89 were also running that day.

Our trip was delayed because 611 derailed as she started to run around the train for the trip to Paradise, PA.  The 611’s engineer pulled too far forward: the pilot truck slipped off the tracks.  No damage was done, but the incident resulted in a delay of nearly two hours.  My son in law and I consoled ourselves with a beer until the train got rolling and the railroad refunded our fares.

In honor of today’s special Sunday March 17, 2024 and Steamday, I’m posting the only green steam locomotive model in my collection – Boston & Albany J-2b Hudson #606. This MTH model (20-3583-1) was delivered in 2015 with PS3. It has a green boiler and a graphite-colored smokebox.

Boston & Albany #606 was a J-2b Hudson built by Alco in August 1930. It had 44,800 pounds of tractive effort and 55,320 pounds including the booster engine on the trailing truck. Total weight (loaded loco and tender) was 557,600 pounds. Unlike New York Central J-1 and J-3 Hudsons with their 79-inch drivers, the B&A J-2 classes had 75-inch drivers to better cope with the grades on the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts where they operated. The railroad between Boston and Albany was not a “Water Level Route.” #606 was scrapped in October 1952

B&A #606 is shown on my 12’-by-8’ layout running at a scale speed of 30 miles-per-hour.

The Wearin' o' the Green.

New to the Great Northeastern Railway (GNR) is this 4-8-2 locomotive recently purchased from the Southern Railroad. Since the GNR livery includes green, gold, silver and white, it is scheduled for future relettering in GNR livery to become the lead of our future flagship passenger train, named after the GNR's former Chairman of the "Bored", Chaz Harrison (also pictured below), the Chazanooga Choo Choo. It also may see some freight service as needed.

Chaz's image also appears as the centerpiece of the GNR logo.

If my memory serves me correctly, it was Randy Harrison who said last Sunday that he wanted to see my MTH PS2 Blue Comet set, headed by a Blue Comet Pacific steamer.

This video shows that set in action:

@Arnold D. Cribari

Arnold:

You are absolutely right, it was me. Thanks for the video. That is a classy set. I have the same locomotive without the MTH coaches. However, my Comet locomotive will pull the coaches from my 5-car, Lionel, MPC era Blue Comet set. My layout platforms are a mess right now while the layout is still undergoing MAJOR renovations. If I can clear a track sufficiently to run several laps and I will attempt to take a video of it if all OGR Forum readers will excuse the MESS!!!!

On behalf of all Forumites, Randy, I declare you are excused!

LOL, Arnold

I'll help Randy out. Below is my son's MTH Bantam Blue Comet with the 5 Lionel MPC passenger cars:

My friend Mr Arnold Cribari must have forgotten to order coal for steaming up this morning so I will start the Steam Day Sunday Parade with New Haven I-5 No. 1409 with heavyweight stainless steel cars headed for Maybrook and Scranton Pa, while New Haven Mountain No. 3507 heads a revenue freight towards New Haven's Cedar Hill Yard. " Good Luck" to Mr. Cribari and his wife Shawn at York this week.
