My steamer for today is New York Central 0-4-0 #901 – an MTH Premier model (20-3261-1, MSRP $599.95) with PS2 delivered in 2007.

MTH describes this model as a Pennsylvania A5s with its Belpaire firebox replaced by a standard radial firebox. The builder’s plate on the smokebox of the New York Central version even says “Juniata Shops” – not a manufacturer from which the NYC would have bought locomotives.

I consulted Steam Locomotives of the New York Central Lines by W.D. Edson and H.L. Vail Jr. but found no reference to a superheated 0-4-0 switcher like this model. The NYC was buying more powerful 0-6-0 steamers by 1900 and began superheating them around 1915. So, although the model is not prototypical, it’s a good size for my 10’-by-5’ model railroad.

Thanks Arnold for keeping the boiler hot and notching out the throttle this morning!!  Your steam locomotive looks and sounds fabulous!!  When the whistle blows: is that steam vapor I see coming from the whistle?  If so I was not aware until now that Lionel had that technology back in 2002. Wow!

Here are is a pick of my two newest steam locomotives ... the B&O President Harrison in the foreground with the N&W 0-8-0 number 244 in the background on the EL.

Sometimes a rail fan photographer gets lucky, and  the stars align.   In this case the stars in alignment are steam locomotives on three levels of my layout.  On the bridge .. a B&O Docksider.  On the EL .. a Western Maryland Consolidation 2-8-0.  On the bottom level .. N&W 0-8-0 facing away in foreground and B&O President Harrison with boiler front to camera.

New York Central 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler #1232 is a Lionel Legacy model (2131070) delivered in 2021. As shown on my 12’-by-8’ model railroad, it’s pulling two New York Central heavyweight passenger cars made by MTH in 1999 as part of 5-Car 70' Madison Passenger Set 20-4026 at MSRP $249.95.

NYC Class F-12 #1232 was built by Alco in 1905 and, after renumbering in 1948, ran in commuter service on the Harlem Division. It was superheated around 1917 and retired in 1952. Class F ten-wheelers also were the standard power on the Putnam Division until the end of steam in 1951. Tractive effort was 31,900 pounds.

Well for today I have an American Flyer (Chicago Flyer), sheet metal Type XX.  The type was made as both a 2-4-4 and in one case a 2-4-0 for a special set.  It was made both in black and gunmetal grey.  The type which sported catalog numbers 401, 3303, and 4303  was made from 1934-1935, was then absent and then returned 1937-1940.  This one, with the # 401 rubber stamped  under the cab window, body made in black, was offered in 1939 and now featured remote reverse.  In my case she came to me as a set and pulled a consist of an #234 baggage car, #235 Pullman and a #236 observation car all in red.  These car numbers are somewhat strange, catalogued as #1214, 1213 and 1212 every year from 1933-1935 and in 1938 except in 1939 when the numbers were changed to # 234, 235, 236.  Apparently Flyer changed the numbers of about everything in 1939, the transition over to Gilbert management was underway and this may be the reason.

Flyer set 401 Locomotive

Here is a front end view of her coming at you!

Here she is with her passenger consist including the matching baggage car.

Best wishes, hope your upcoming week goes well.

OK - you apparently have one of my weaknesses. Old 2RO/3RO/outside 3RO. I do not have much, but it fascinates me. I seem to see a Scale Craft NYC Hudson, left, 3rd shelf. I just sold mine at a show last Spring. It was painted (poorly), complete, except for the headlight. Some black-painted styrene tube was used to make it look better for sale (full disclosure). Mine had the rotating steam dome manual e-unit and center-rail pickups. It sold itself when I said to the customer: "pick it up". Cast bronze or brass, but the tender was cast aluminum.

@Darrell posted:

Today we have the MTH MTHRRC 2-8-0 from 2003, 30-1309-1, heading a tourist excursion. This model was originally a 5 volt PS/2 model and has been upgraded to PS/3 using a PS32 stacker board. It is seen here running under DCC mode on my layout. And yes, I know I need to replace the headlight that burnt out.

I like the open air car is that a custom build?
