I have found what seem to be 1/43 die cast cars and pickup trucks at Rite Aide Pharmacies in Alabama. About $6 each. Probably not the "best", but good enough for large bunches.

I found several at mine (NC), too- an RV conversion Ford can and a food vendor versio of a UPS step van type truck, and a couple of cars. As you said, not the greatest, but more than worth the money.
Thiking I might be on to somehting I looked in CVS and Walgreens, too, but no cigar.

Not the greatest and not 1:43.

just bought in buffalo 4.99 first second 1/2 off . not bad rite aid
I have seen them in Rite Aid and other stores. Most are a little larger then 1:43, around 1/39 or so. I recently seen some 1:43 in the local Cracker Barrel, $6.00.
I am wondering about the strange location
Bills is correct about the scale issue but many of those toys are close enough and look good enough as long as you don't park them next to one of the high dollar scale models. I always check those types of stores for cars and light trucks.

I found them at Dollar General. The best part was they had newer cars out I haven't seen anywhere else like the new Challenger, Mini Cooper, a Ford Focus, BMW, etc..... It was a few cars you see around the streets every day THESE days! So if your modeling current RRs then its a must! I use to run by "Big Lots" because they carried some 1/43 to 1/50 scale stuff sometimes. Its rare, but when you find them at these stores they are CHEAP compared to others!
And with a little custom painting of turn signals, lights, mirrors, etc.... they make really good looking models to occupy your layout for far less money than others!
Rite Aid has them up here in New England as well.
I find the cars to be too big for my taste, BUT the trucks have the same wheels and tires so they are close enough.
I am also looking for older equipment as I run all steam, this limits my selection and keeps my wallet from being empty.
I wish I got a dime for every complaint I read on this forum that 1:43 is too big for O layout. Now you guys are going nuts for even larger. I guess the key word is cheap.

Just came back from getting a flu shot at CVS and they had them too. Lots of modern stuff which I didn't pay any attention to, but they had a '52 or so Caddy 2-door, a '55 Nomad, a 2-seater T-Bird (can't remember the year), a Gullwing and maybe a couple of other things from the 50's. Price was 6.99 if I remember right.
Yep...the CVS and Rite Aid by me has them too.....Greg
