I never thought I'd get to relate a Hawaii trip to trains...but I can now! My wife and I just returned from Maui after spending a week at Scale Rail's house. It was a great time. Even though it is not currently running, Don took me down to the Sugar Cane Train rail yard, depots and the trestle for a photo op. I snapped a few pics of the locomotives, rolling stock and the trestle. I took some artistic license and shot some of the photos with my fisheye lens. I also saw Scale Rail's new Milwaukee Road layout that is under construction. We had a wonderful week in paradise with good friends! Mahalo, again to Don and Vicky!

Very nice Matt. Those Plymouth switchers turn up in the oddest places, they are real little workhorses. I saw Don's post yesterday. You two have made a great friendship through our shared hobby.
I rode that train a few years ago. Have photos somewhere. I bought a hat and matching t-shift--very fancy stuff. Somehow I've lost the hat, and would like to get another.

I am glad I got to see this road and ride it when I did. Too much like the steam era
structures such as stations, coaling towers, complete railyards I have photographed..
they are there, and then they're gone. I hope this gets reincarnated.
I rode that train on my honeymoon. I hope it comes back as I would like to go on my 15th annivversary!
They are working on it now. Saw a crew for the first time in years working on the track. December is their target date for start up but this being Maui I would think more like June. We had a great time with our friend last week. Miss them already. Don

That's all I got so far. It's a work in progress.
Cool!
Love the pictures! There are also 2 trains on Oahu, one is at the Dole pineapple plantation (wife signed us up) and the other is on the southwest part of the Island and runs past the new Disney resort. http://www.hawaiianrailway.com/directions.html Not quite a historic sugar cane train but the view isn't bad.
I didn't know there was another (tourist?) RR on the islands, besides the one on Maui, and I drove all over Oahu in a rented 3 cylinder Geo (this was in the '90's).
Nothing but steam running then.
Like they always say, "Ride it while you can," right?
So glad it looks like it'll be running again eventually.
When I tell peole I have seen almost every narrow gauge railroad in America, I'm not kidding. Did the White Pass 3 years before that...

It's good. Reminded me of "Chicken Train".
